Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex produces several liner and venting product lines, but the chimney caps we install most often in Olympia pair with their SS (stainless steel) flexible liner systems and their AL (aluminum) economy lines. Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Is Failing

• Rust streaks or orange staining on the chase siding. DuraFlex caps use 304 or 316 stainless, but the spot-welded collar seam is where chloride corrosion starts first in Olympia’s marine air. Once the seam opens, water tracks down the flue and stains whatever it touches.
• Water in the firebox after rain. The cap’s mesh screen is designed to shed water outward, but if the lid has warped or the storm collar has cracked, water enters the flue directly. In our climate, this accelerates liner deterioration from the top down.
• Animal intrusion or nesting debris. DuraFlex caps include ¾-inch mesh to block birds and rodents. When mesh corrodes or blows off - common after the third or fourth windstorm season - squirrels and starlings move in fast, especially near the wooded lots off Mud Bay Road and the Green Cove area.
• Spalling or freeze-thaw damage on the chase top. A failed cap lets water saturate the concrete crown beneath it. Olympia’s freeze cycles aren’t severe, but thirty-plus nights below freezing each winter is enough to pop surface chunks off a wet crown.
• Smoke spillage or draft reversal on startup. If the cap’s internal baffle has corroded through or the entire assembly has shifted off-square, the venturi effect that draws smoke upward is disrupted. You’ll notice it first on cold, damp mornings when the stack temperature is lowest.

What you cannot safely do is climb a steep-pitch roof to measure collar depth, torque a draw-band to spec, or verify that the flue liner hasn’t dropped below the crown line.
