How Famco Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

• Famco 304 stainless single-flue caps: The mesh on these caps is 18-gauge, which is lighter than the 16-gauge mesh Gelco uses on comparable models. In Olympia’s wet winters, that thinner mesh traps moisture against the flue tile longer, and we’ve found accelerated rust at the weld points after six to eight years. We replace with either OEM Famco mesh or, more often, a heavier aftermarket 16-gauge equivalent that sheds Pacific Northwest rain faster.
• Famco galvanized multi-flue caps: The galvanized coating on the 300-series multi-flue units holds up poorly where roof runoff splashes back from the chimney shoulder, a common problem on Olympia’s low-slope ranch roofs built in the 1970s and 1980s. We see white rust (zinc oxide) forming at the base corners within four years. Our fix is either a stainless upgrade or a custom-fabricated drip edge that breaks the splash pattern.
• Famco draft-increasing caps with the integrated wind-beater: The wind-beater assembly on the WD series seizes when creosote glazes the pivot. Olympia’s heavy Douglas fir and western hemlock burning creates Class III creosote, thick and crusted, that jams the mechanism. We disassemble, media-blast the pivot housing, and either restore function or recommend a fixed-cap replacement if the owner burns softwood regularly.
• Famco concrete crown wash compatibility: Famco caps mount with a standard 4-bolt flange pattern, but their documentation doesn’t specify crown slope minimums. We’ve found caps installed on dead-level crowns in the Eastside and South Capitol neighborhoods where water pools under the flange and freezes. Our repair includes re-sloping the crown to 1/4 inch per foot minimum before cap reset, or full crown rebuild if the concrete is spalling.
• Famco copper cap patina failure: The copper caps in Famco’s premium line are 20-ounce copper, which is correct for most applications, but the factory solder at the seams uses 50/50 tin-lead. Olympia’s marine air accelerates galvanic corrosion at those joints. We re-solder with 95/5 tin-antimony on repair jobs, or source solid-seam copper alternatives through our Haven network when the cap is beyond patching.
