Which Gelco Models This Applies To

The throat models carry a stamped “G” series mark, usually on the handle bracket or the plate edge. The compatibility gotcha we run into most often: Gelco changed their handle shaft diameter in 2004. Signs Your Gelco Damper Repair Is Failing

• Handle spins without resistance. The spline connection between the handle and the shaft has stripped, usually from forcing a stuck plate. The shaft itself may be fine, but the handle is now freewheeling and can’t lift the plate.
• Plate won’t open fully or hangs crooked. The frame rails have warped from heat cycling, or creosote has built up along the plate edges. In Olympia’s wet shoulder seasons, we see this more often in homes that burn intermittently, the metal heating and cooling without ever reaching a sustained burn that would fully season the flue.
• Draft smells even when the fireplace is cold. The plate isn’t seating flush against the frame. On Gelco top-sealing models, the silicone gasket compresses over time, and the stainless frame can micro-shift if the chimney crown above it has taken water.
• Rust dust or flakes below the damper. Cast-iron throat plates oxidize from the top down, where condensation collects during our long, damp springs. By the time you see rust below, the plate face is often pitted enough to leak smoke under pressure.
• Loud pop or clang when opening. The plate has detached from one hinge pin. On older Gelco units, the pin welds fatigue after fifteen to twenty years of thermal shock. This is the failure that most often sends a plate crashing into the firebox, sometimes cracking the back wall.

What we don’t recommend: removing a stuck plate with leverage tools, or working above the firebox without proper support. A cast-iron Gelco plate weighs twelve to eighteen pounds depending on the flue dimension, and it’s balanced on two small pins. When one pin shears, the plate drops fast.
