The Olympia 1000 Series and 2000 Series use a pivot-arm cast-iron frame with a 5/16-inch thick plate; the 3000 Series and later transition to a stainless parallel-lift assembly with a thinner, 3/16-inch plate and a different pivot geometry. We’ve also seen Olympia dampers labeled under OEM contracts for Heatilator and Superior installations from the mid-2000s through about 2018.

To identify yours: look for a stamped model number on the frame’s right-hand side (facing the firebox), or measure the throat opening width and depth. The 1000/2000 Series plates are 8, 10, or 12 inches wide; the 3000 Series runs 10, 13, or 16 inches. Mixing series will leave you with a plate that binds or leaks. • The chain pulls with no resistance. The plate has detached from the pivot arm, usually because the cotter pin corroded through or the cast-iron ear cracked. This is common in Olympia’s 1000 Series after 15-20 years of Pacific Northwest moisture cycling.
• You smell smoke or cold drafts even when the damper is “closed.” The plate warped or the frame rusted at the seat, leaving a gap. Olympia’s cast-iron plates are thick but not immune to thermal fatigue; once the seat line is compromised, the seal is gone.
• The handle or chain is seized completely. Creosote has glazed the pivot mechanism, or the frame has rust-swelled against the plate. We see this most in fireplaces that burn wet wood or sit idle for long stretches.
• Grinding or scraping when you operate the control. The pivot bushing wore through, and metal is riding on metal. Continuing to force it will oval the frame holes and turn a bushing job into a full assembly replacement.
• Visible rust flakes or orange staining on the firebrick below the throat. The frame is actively deteriorating. In Olympia’s climate, the temperature swing from 40°F rain to 400°F flue gas accelerates oxidation at the waterline where the frame meets the masonry.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s one safe check you can do from the hearth: shine a flashlight up the flue and look for the plate position. If it’s hanging crooked or detached, you know the mechanism failed. Beyond that, damper replacement involves working at height inside the firebox, often with your shoulders above the lintel and your hands in a space you can’t see into. The cast-iron frames weigh 15-25 pounds, and dropping one onto the hearth or your face is a real risk. We don’t recommend DIY removal.

More critically, a misaligned replacement will leak carbon monoxide and creosote into the living space during use, or bleed heated air out when the fireplace is idle.
